NYKB에서 8월 20일 화요일에 특별세미나를 기획하였기에 이렇게 연락을 드립니다.

특별세미나 speaker는 IBM에서 AI 분야 연구 중이신 고봉준 박사님이십니다.
지난 번 6월에 NYKB 특별세미나가 취소되어서 아쉬워 하시는 분들이 많이 계셔서,
이번 8월에 다시 모시게 되었습니다.

특별세미나 내용 및 Abstract은 아래와 같습니다.

요즘들어 4차산업혁명과 관련하여 Machine learning/Deep learning 에 대한 관심이 높아지고 여러 산업에서 활용되기 시작했습니다.
생명과학 분야에도 big data의 활용과 중요성이 급격하게 증대되고 있습니다.
Multi-omics (genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics, metabolomics, lipidomics 등등) data, single cell analysis data등 많은 biological big data 의 생성되고 있습니다.
이런 다량의 data를 어떻게 분석하고 활용해야 하는 지, 어떻게 machine learning/Deep learning 기술을 적용할 수 있는 지에 대해 관심과 고민이 있는 NYKB 회원님들이 많을 것으로 생각됩니다.
그래서 생물학 분야의 Machine learning/Deep learning에 대해 배우고 토론할 수 있는 special seminar를 열기로 했습니다.

Almost everyday, we hear some news about how recent advances in artificial
intelligence (AI) technology are changing many areas of our lives, from smart
speakers, to self-driving cars, and even to scientific discoveries. To many, AI is
a revolutionary (often seemingly magical) technology, which suddenly came to
be in the limelight and is bringing the future we used to see only in sci-fi movies
to now and here. To many others, it is simply in the continuum of evolution of
technologies, invented and re-invented in our pursuit of improving the
productivity, an effort that can be traced back to the 1st industrial revolution era.
While both views contain elements of truth, it would be foolish to deny that it will
truly affect our lives both as consumers and workers, though how fast and how
wide need to be tested by time.
In this talk, I will try to shed a light on how AI technologies, in particular
machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques, are being used to
solve many problems that have traditionally eluded effective solutions. While it
will be impossible to cover all of the wide areas of ML/DL due to the limits in
time and in my own knowledge, it is my hope that, through the discussion of
some fundamentals of ML/DL, a few important “branches” of ML approaches,
and their popular applications, we could understand, at least at a high level,
their capabilities as well as the (current) limitations. If nothing else, I certainly
believe that this talk will be a worthy conversation across the two fields–life
science and computer science–a junction that may very well become the
center point of AI (r)evolution.

강의 해주실 연사는 현재 IBM에서 AI 분야 연구하시는 고봉준 박사님입니다.
고봉준 박사님은 서울대/Columbia에서 전자공학 전공하시고 2006년 부터 IBM T. J. Watson Research Center에서 연구하고 계십니다.

Speaker Bio:
Bongjun Ko is a Research Staff Member and Research Manager at IBM T. J.
Watson Research Center. In IBM Research, he is currently leading the
research effort to develop AI technologies for Internet of Things (IoT) systems
and applications. He has also worked on research projects related to
distributed network management, micro cloud, and network analytics. Prior to
joining IBM Research, he worked as a Senior Member of Research Staff in
Philips Research North America, and as a research engineer in LG Electronics,
Korea. In 1999, he co-founded a start-up, NeoMTel, Inc., in which he developed
a new mobile animation codec that was shipped in more than 100 million
mobile phones world-wide at the time. He received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical
Engineering from Columbia University in 2006, and B.S. and M.S. degrees from
Seoul National University in South Korea. He received best paper awards in
multiple international conferences in the field of computer science: IEEE ICNP
2003, IEEE/IFIP IM 2013, ACM AINTEC 2017, and ICISSP 2018. He is an IBM
Master Inventor (2013-2019), currently holding 40+ US patents.
